Travel to a local community where generations have preserved the ancient methods of preparing Ethiopia’s most iconic homemade beverages. Along the way, your guide will introduce the historical and cultural importance of traditional brewing in Ethiopian society, where these drinks play an essential role in family gatherings, celebrations, weddings, and religious festivities.

Upon arrival, receive a warm welcome from a local family and begin exploring the preparation of Tella, Ethiopia’s traditional homemade beer. Learn how carefully selected grains such as barley, maize, wheat, or sorghum are cleaned, roasted, and fermented with gesho (Ethiopian hops), a unique plant that gives Tella its distinctive flavor and aroma. Discover how traditional clay pots are used during fermentation and how recipes have been passed down through generations.

Continue to the preparation of Areke, Ethiopia’s traditional distilled spirit. Observe the complete distillation process using locally crafted equipment while learning how the fermented mash is transformed into a clear, aromatic beverage.
