Since 1991, this self declared independent nation has flourished, creating a safe and welcoming destination for travelers. For the intrepid explorer, Somaliland reveals a rich tapestry of history from the enduring legacy of British Somaliland to some of the most significant Neolithic rock art on the African continent. This journey explores the vibrant capital of Hargeisa, the 10,000 year old caves of Laas Geel, the mountain vistas of Sheikh and the atmospheric Ottoman ruins of Berbera’s ancient port.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & the Spirit of Hargeisa

Welcome: Upon arrival at Egal International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, if time permits, enjoy an introductory exploration of the city’s vibrant markets and bustling streets.

City Highlights: A highlight of Hargeisa is its famous Livestock Market, where camels, goats, and sheep are traded in a lively atmosphere that feels timeless.

Accommodation: Overnight at Gulf Hotel (or similar), Hargeisa.

Day 2: Hargeisa – Laas Geel – Berbera

Ancient Art: After breakfast, depart for Laas Geel, a remarkable complex of caves featuring some of the finest preserved Neolithic rock art in Africa. The paintings depict ancient pastoralists and wildlife in vivid detail.

Coastal Exploration: Continue onward to the coastal city of Berbera. Visit a historic Ottoman Mosque and enjoy a late lunch in a traditional Ottoman house. Later, take a boat trip across the Gulf of Aden to view shipwrecks and enjoy a swim at an untouched beach.
Please note: Due to local customs, ladies are kindly requested to wear modest swim attire and keep covered while in the water.

Sunset Tour: In the early evening, explore Berbera’s historic quarter and photograph its Ottoman, Persian, and British architecture in the warm glow of sunset.

Accommodation: Overnight at Hayat Hotel (or similar), Berbera.

Day 3: Berbera – Sheikh – Hargeisa

Mountain Scenery: Drive to the mountain town of Sheikh, known for its cool climate and scenic setting. Enjoy a walk through the town and visit the ruins of Ferdusa, a 16th-century settlement known for its ancient tombs.

Return Journey: Continue back to Hargeisa, stopping along the route to admire and photograph the dramatic mountain landscapes.

Accommodation: Overnight at Damal Hotel (or similar), Hargeisa.

Day 4: Departure

Farewell: Your 4-day tour concludes today. Depending on your flight schedule, a private transfer will be arranged to Egal International Airport for your departure.
