3-Day Ethiopia Timket Festival Tour

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Gondar – Historic City Tour

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia. Upon arrival, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. After lunch, begin exploring Gondar’s remarkable historical attractions. Visit Fasil Ghebbi, the famous royal enclosure containing medieval castles and palaces built by Ethiopia’s emperors. Continue to Fasilides’ Bath, the historic site that becomes the center of Gondar’s Timket celebration. Visit Debre Berhan Selassie Church, renowned for its beautifully painted ceiling decorated with angel faces. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner while learning about the history and significance of Timket.

Day 2: Timket Festival – Colorful Processions & Religious Celebration

Rise early to experience the heart of the Timket Festival. Join the local community as priests dressed in colorful ceremonial robes, accompanied by chanting, drums and traditional umbrellas, take part in the procession of the Tabot, a sacred replica representing the Ark of the Covenant. Proceed to Fasilides’ Bath, where thousands of worshippers and visitors gather for the major Timket celebrations. Experience the extraordinary atmosphere of prayer, singing, dancing and traditional ceremonies. Timket commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and is one of the most important celebrations in the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian calendar. Spend the rest of the day experiencing the festival atmosphere, photographing the colorful celebrations and interacting respectfully with local people. Start the morning with another opportunity to experience Timket celebrations around Gondar. Depending on the official festival program, witness additional prayers, processions and community celebrations. After breakfast, enjoy some free time for souvenir shopping or a final visit to Gondar’s historic center. Transfer to Gondar Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your international departure schedule, you may have time for lunch, shopping or a farewell Ethiopian coffee ceremony before your journey concludes.
