9-Day Lalibela & Omo Valley Cultural Discovery Tour

This carefully designed journey combines two of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary cultural experiences: the spiritual heritage of Lalibela and the diverse living cultures of the Lower Omo Valley. Lalibela is home to 11 medieval rock-hewn churches recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, while South Omo is renowned for its extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Lalibela – Historic Churches

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and have lunch before beginning your exploration of the legendary Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches. Visit the northern group of churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Maskal, Bete Denagel and Bete Golgotha Mikael. Walk through the remarkable courtyards, tunnels and passages connecting the churches while learning about the history and spiritual significance of this extraordinary pilgrimage center.

Overnight: Lalibela.

Day 2: Lalibela – Southern Churches & Local Culture

After breakfast, continue your exploration of Lalibela’s remarkable churches. Visit the southern group, including Bete Gabriel-Rufael, Bete Amanuel, Bete Mercoreus and the famous Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), dramatically carved into the ground in the shape of a cross. In the afternoon, take a short walk through the surrounding traditional villages and experience local life. Depending on the day and season, you may also visit a local market or enjoy traditional Ethiopian coffee and food.

Overnight: Lalibela.

Day 3: Lalibela – Addis Ababa – Arba Minch

After breakfast, transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, followed by a connecting flight to Arba Minch, the gateway to southern Ethiopia. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel. Spend the afternoon relaxing or enjoying views over the surrounding Rift Valley landscape.

Overnight: Arba Minch.

Day 4: Arba Minch – Dorze Village – Lake Chamo – Konso

After breakfast, drive into the Gamo Highlands to visit the fascinating Dorze people. Discover their distinctive bamboo and grass houses, traditional weaving, farming practices and cultural traditions. You can also experience traditional food and a local coffee ceremony. Return toward Arba Minch for a Lake Chamo boat excursion, where you may see large Nile crocodiles, hippos and numerous waterbirds. Continue to Konso in the afternoon and explore its spectacular cultural landscape, including traditional settlements, stone terraces and agricultural systems.

Overnight: Konso.

Day 5: Konso – Jinka – Mursi Village

After breakfast, continue south toward Jinka, the gateway to the Lower Omo Valley. South Omo is home to numerous ethnic groups, each with distinctive languages, traditions, clothing and cultural practices. After lunch in Jinka, travel toward Mago National Park to visit a Mursi village. Learn about Mursi traditions, cattle-based livelihoods, body adornment and community life. Return to Jinka in the late afternoon.

Overnight: Jinka.

Day 6: Jinka – Key Afer Market – Turmi – Hamer Experience

After breakfast, drive toward Turmi, stopping at Key Afer Market when it coincides with the local market day. The market brings together people from surrounding communities and provides a wonderful opportunity to see traditional clothing, jewelry, livestock and agricultural products. Market days are one of the best ways to encounter the cultural diversity of South Omo. Continue to Turmi and visit a Hamer village. Learn about Hamer traditions, hairstyles, body decoration, livestock and family life. If a traditional bull-jumping ceremony or Evangadi dance takes place during your visit, your local guide will help arrange the experience. Ceremonies are seasonal and depend on local circumstances, so they cannot be guaranteed.

Day 7: Turmi – Karo Village – Omo River

Today, travel toward the Omo River to meet the Karo people, famous for their distinctive body painting and traditional cultural practices.Visit a Karo village and learn about their relationship with the Omo River, livestock and surrounding environment. Enjoy spectacular views across the river and surrounding lowlands before returning to Turmi.

Overnight: Turmi.

Day 8: Turmi – Omorate – Dassanech – Arba Minch

Begin early for Omorate, located near the Kenyan border. Cross the Omo River by local boat and visit a traditional Dassanech village. Experience the community’s traditional lifestyle, homes, jewelry, clothing and relationship with the Omo River. The Lower Omo is recognized by UNESCO for its important cultural and archaeological heritage. After the visit, return to Omorate and begin the drive north toward Arba Minch. Enjoy the changing scenery as the dry Omo Valley gradually gives way to the greener landscapes of the Rift Valley.

Overnight: Arba Minch.

Day 9: Arba Minch – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, enjoy some free time in Arba Minch before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for shopping or a farewell Ethiopian coffee experience in Addis Ababa before your 9-Day Lalibela & Omo Valley Cultural Discovery Tour comes to an end.
