5-Day Expedition to the Danakil Depression & Dallol

Day 01: Fly Addis Ababa – Semera – Drive to Ahmed Ela

After breakfast, transfer to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your domestic flight to Semera, the gateway to the legendary Danakil Depression. Upon arrival, meet your expedition team and begin the drive to Ahmed Ela, passing through dramatic volcanic landscapes, lava fields, and traditional Afar villages. Enjoy your first glimpse of one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth while learning about the unique culture of the Afar people. Arrive in Ahmed Ela in the late afternoon, where you will enjoy dinner under the stars before an overnight camping experience.

Day 02: Dallol Hydrothermal Field – Lake Assale

Depart before sunrise for the extraordinary Dallol Hydrothermal Field, one of the world’s most surreal geological wonders. Explore its colorful mineral terraces, vibrant sulfur springs, bubbling salt formations, and spectacular geothermal landscapes created by volcanic activity. Continue to Lake Assale (Karum), a vast salt lake lying approximately 120 meters below sea level. Observe the traditional salt mining activities carried out by the Afar people and watch camel caravans transporting salt blocks across the desert, a centuries-old trading tradition. Return to Ahmed Ela for dinner and overnight camping.

Day 03: Erta Ale Volcano Trek

After breakfast, begin your journey toward Erta Ale, one of the world’s few continuously active volcanoes. Drive across the rugged volcanic desert, stopping to admire the dramatic lava fields and unique geological formations. In the late afternoon, begin the trek to the summit of Erta Ale Volcano. Upon reaching the crater rim, witness the spectacular lava lake, where glowing molten lava creates an unforgettable natural spectacle, especially after sunset. Overnight camping near the volcano.

Day 04: Sunrise at Erta Ale – Return to Semera

Wake early to enjoy a breathtaking sunrise over the volcanic landscape before descending from Erta Ale. After breakfast, drive back through the remarkable scenery of the Danakil Depression toward Semera, with opportunities to stop for photographs of the desert landscapes and Afar settlements along the route. Arrive in Semera in the late afternoon and check into your hotel for a well-deserved rest. Overnight in Semera.

Day 05: Fly Semera – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, transfer to Semera Airport for your scheduled domestic flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, enjoy free time for shopping or optional sightseeing, depending on your international flight schedule. Later, transfer to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your onward departure, concluding an unforgettable expedition to one of the world’s most extraordinary natural landscapes.
