5-Day Bale Mountains Trek & Wildlife Adventure

Experience the spectacular Bale Mountains National Park on an action-packed five-day adventure combining high-altitude trekking, wildlife watching and exploration of Ethiopia’s unique Afro-alpine ecosystems. Search for the Ethiopian Wolf, Mountain Nyala and Bale Monkey, trek across the spectacular Sanetti Plateau, and descend into the lush Harenna Forest.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Dinsho – Bale Mountains National Park

Depart Addis Ababa in the morning and drive southeast toward the Bale Mountains. Enjoy the changing scenery as the road climbs through the Ethiopian highlands toward Dinsho, the gateway to Bale Mountains National Park. After lunch, visit the Dinsho Wildlife Area for an introductory nature walk. The surrounding grasslands and forests provide excellent opportunities to spot Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, warthogs, Bohor reedbuck and a variety of highland birds. Meet your trekking team and prepare for the following days of adventure.

Overnight: Dinsho.

Day 2: Dinsho – Gaysay Valley – Sodota

After breakfast, begin your trek through the beautiful Gaysay Valley. Walk across open highland grasslands surrounded by rolling mountains and enjoy spectacular views of the Bale landscape.The valley is an excellent area for wildlife observation. Keep watch for Mountain Nyala, Ethiopian wolves, Bohor reedbuck and endemic birds as you follow the trail. Continue toward Sodota, enjoying a picnic lunch along the way. Arrive at camp in the afternoon and relax around the campsite while taking in the peaceful mountain environment.

Day 3: Sodota – Sanetti Plateau – Ethiopian Wolf Search

Today is one of the highlights of the adventure. Continue climbing toward the spectacular Sanetti Plateau, one of Africa’s largest areas of Afro-alpine habitat. The landscape changes dramatically as you reach the high plateau, with vast grasslands, giant lobelias, volcanic formations and mountain wetlands. Spend time exploring the area and searching for the Ethiopian Wolf, one of the world’s rarest canids. The Sanetti Plateau is also home to large populations of endemic rodents, making it an important habitat for this remarkable predator. Depending on weather and trekking conditions, continue toward the high-altitude camping area and enjoy an unforgettable evening beneath the Bale Mountains’ clear skies.

Day 4: Sanetti Plateau – Harenna Forest – Goba

Wake early and enjoy the spectacular highland scenery before beginning your descent from the Sanetti Plateau toward the magnificent Harenna Forest. This dramatic transition takes you from open Afro-alpine wilderness into dense montane forest. Along the way, look for Bale monkeys, Guereza colobus monkeys, forest birds and other wildlife. Explore sections of the forest before continuing toward Rira/Goba. After several days in the mountains, enjoy a comfortable evening at your hotel.

Day 5: Goba – Bale Mountains Scenic Drive – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, take a final scenic drive through the Bale highlands. Depending on your departure schedule, visit additional viewpoints or nearby communities before beginning the journey back to Addis Ababa. Enjoy the changing scenery of southeastern Ethiopia along the way. Arrive in Addis Ababa in the late afternoon or evening, marking the end of your 5-Day Bale Mountains Trek & Wildlife Adventure.
