Program in Detail

Day 1: Arrival & The Islamic Heritage of Addis Ababa

Arrive in Addis Ababa and settle into your hotel. Explore the capital’s deep ties to Islamic history. You’ll begin with the Bilalul Habeshi Museum, this exclusive cultural gem offers you a rare glimpse into ancient history through four beautifully curated galleries featuring 400-year-old hand-written Qurans, historic royal artifacts, and stunning architectural photography. This Museum also highlights the life and legacy of Bilal ibn Rabah (the first Muezzin of Islam, who was of Ethiopian descent) and various influential Ethiopian Islamic scholars and sheikhs.

Grand Anwar Mosque is the largest and oldest mosque in Addis Ababa, serving as the main religious hub for the city’s Muslim community. Located in the heart of the bustling Addis Mercato market, this historic landmark features a striking green and white architectural design. Visiting provides a unique cultural look into Ethiopian Islamic heritage, offering a serene atmosphere just steps away from Africa’s largest open-air market.

National Museum of Ethiopia is one of the most important museums in sub-Saharan Africa, it showcases Ethiopia’s rich archaeological heritage. Here, you will find the world-famous fossil remains of Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis), as well as Selam, a remarkably complete child hominid fossil estimated to be 3.3 million years old.

Conclude the day with a relaxed Ethiopian coffee ceremony. This is a sensory, multi-sensory ritual that cannot be rushed:

  • The Roasting & The Aroma: The ceremony begins with a bed of fresh aromatic grasses (Ketema) spread on the floor. Raw green coffee beans are carefully washed and roasted on a flat pan over an open charcoal brazier. Once the beans turn dark and oily, the pan is passed around so you can waft and enjoy the rich, fragrant smoke.
  • The Brewing: The roasted beans are ground using a traditional mortar and pestle and transferred into a clay pot called a Jebena. Water is added, and the coffee is brought to a boil over the charcoal.
  • The Three Rounds: The coffee is skillfully poured from high above into small ceramic cups (Sini) without spilling. It is served alongside popcorn, roasted barley (Kolo), or dates, accompanied by burning frankincense. To experience the ritual fully, you will enjoy three distinct rounds, each holding its own spiritual blessing: Abol (the strong first brew), Tona (the smooth second brew), and Baraka (the third brew, meaning “the blessing”).

Overnight in Addis Ababa

Day 2: Contemporary Islamic Culture & Culinary Traditions

After breakfast you’ll explore the Imam Al-Bukhari Islamic Center in the Kolfe neighborhood, a highly active venue for modern Islamic learning, community gathering, and spiritual education in Addis Ababa. A welcoming complex dedicated to the preservation of Hadith sciences and religious outreach, offers an inside look at how contemporary Islamic studies, charity networks, and youth educational initiatives operate within the capital.

Nur (Beni) Mosque stands proudly in the historic Piassa district. Established originally in 1908, this site marks the location of the very first mosque built in the newly founded capital town of Addis Ababa. While the original modest 19th-century structure was replaced by a modern, expansive mosque complex in 2005, it remains an anchor of faith for the city’s urban center.

Bait Al Mandi is a fantastic destination to experience premium halal dining, showcasing how Arab-Islamic culinary styles have blended beautifully into the local culinary scene. Celebrated for its perfectly slow-cooked, seasoned Mandi rice dishes and tender grilled meats. Features comfortable, middle eastern inspired communal dining spaces perfect for relaxing after a busy day of sightseeing.
