Their distinctive beehive-shaped houses are built from natural materials and surrounded by gardens with spices, cabbage, and tobacco. In the early morning, we will drive to Konso, where we can observe the vibrant traditional dress, impressive terracing, and uniquely carved wooden statues used as grave markers. The Konso people are dedicated farmers, renowned for their stone terraces, which help them thrive in the dry, barren basalt hills. Originally from the east, they speak an East Cushitic language and live in fortified settlements surrounded by stone walls. Each town’s age is marked by a generation pole, and family compounds are entered through gateways that require visitors to crawl, making them vulnerable to potential attackers. Afterward, we continue to Key Afer for the lively Thursday market, where we’ll see and photograph the colorful Ari, Bena, Hamer, and Tsemay people. Bena and Hamer women often wear red clay braids in their hair, coated in butter and scented with incense. Tsemay women wear long beaded skirts with a stick in the back to signify they are married, while the men sport elaborately plaited hairstyles adorned with feathers and beads. Following the market visit, we will drive on to Jinka, known as the gateway to the Omo Valley.

Day 03: Sun. Oct. 12, 2025 Visit The Mursi Tribes in Mago Park and Drive to Turmi
We begin the day with an early drive to Mago National Park, followed by a visit to the Mursi Highlands, home to one of Ethiopia’s most famous tribes. The Mursi are internationally known for their unique lip plates, which are worn by the women and are a symbol of beauty, pride, and desirability. The size of the lip plate directly correlates to a woman’s status in the tribe. While the Mursi men and women may appear gracious, the Mursi warriors are formidable, marked by crescent-shaped scars on their arms that represent each enemy they have slain in battle. The men are also known for their distinctive hairstyles. Cultural aspects of the Mursi will be explained, and you’ll have the opportunity to photograph them (for a fee). Afterward, we return to Jinka for lunch.
In the afternoon, we continued our journey through the Omo Valley to Turmi via Dimeka to visit the Hamer tribe. One of the largest groups in the region, the Hamer people are skilled in agriculture, cultivating millet, vegetables, tobacco, and cotton, as well as raising cattle and goats. They are renowned for their pottery and striking hairstyles. The most dramatic of these are the clay hair buns with ostrich feathers worn by men who have killed a fierce animal. The Hamer women are known for their stunning appearance, wearing beaded necklaces, iron coils around their arms, and decorating their skin with cowry shells. These adornments symbolize the wealth and status of their husbands.

We arrive at Korcho village with beautiful views over the Omo River to see the Karo ethnic group, experts in body painting, using clay and locally available vegetable pigments to paint fantastic patterns on each other’s faces, chests, arms and legs. These designs have no special symbolic significance, but are created purely for fun and aesthetic effect, each artist vying to out-do their fellow artists. Karo men also sculpt and shave their hair into extravagant shapes, with special ochre “caps” of hair usually containing several ostrich feathers. In the early afternoon, we will start driving to Arba Minch through Konso.
