Program in Detail
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa – Discover the Islamic Heritage of the Capital
Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Your journey begins with a visit to the Bilalul Habeshi Museum, an exceptional cultural institution dedicated to preserving Ethiopia’s Islamic heritage. The museum provides a fascinating introduction to the country’s rich Islamic history through four beautifully curated galleries featuring over 400-year-old handwritten Qur’ans, historic royal artifacts, and an impressive collection of architectural photography that reflects centuries of Islamic civilization in Ethiopia.
Continue to the Grand Anwar Mosque, the largest and oldest mosque in Addis Ababa. Located in the heart of the bustling Mercato district, this historic landmark serves as the principal place of worship for the city’s Muslim community. Its distinctive green-and-white architecture and peaceful surroundings offer visitors a unique opportunity to appreciate Ethiopia’s Islamic traditions while experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Africa’s largest open-air market.
The day’s exploration concludes at the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the most important museums in Sub-Saharan Africa. Here, you will discover Ethiopia’s remarkable archaeological heritage, including the world-renowned fossil remains of Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis) and Selam, the exceptionally preserved 3.3-million-year-old child hominid, offering an extraordinary insight into the origins of humanity. After the tour, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening.
Overnight: Addis Ababa
Day 2: Flight to Mekelle – The Land of the First Hijra (Al Nejashi)
After an early breakfast, transfer to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your morning flight to Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray Region. Upon arrival, drive north to the historic village of Negash, home to the revered Al Nejashi Mosque, one of Africa’s oldest and most significant Islamic landmarks. This sacred site holds profound spiritual importance as the burial place of several companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who sought refuge in Ethiopia after fleeing persecution in Mecca during the First Hijra.
They were welcomed by the righteous Christian King Armah (Al Najashi), making this remarkable location a lasting symbol of religious tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and interfaith harmony. Explore the beautifully restored mosque complex and visit the ancient tombs of the early Muslim refugees while learning about one of the most significant chapters in Islamic history. Later in the afternoon, return to Mekelle.
Overnight: Mekelle
Day 3: Fly to Dire Dawa via Addis Ababa and Explore Harar
Following breakfast, board your domestic flight from Mekelle to Dire Dawa, travelling via Addis Ababa if required by the flight schedule. Upon arrival in Dire Dawa, enjoy a scenic drive of approximately one and a half hours through the surrounding mountains before reaching the ancient fortified city of Harar, one of Africa’s oldest and most important Islamic centers. After checking into your hotel, begin your exploration of Harar Jugol, the centuries-old walled city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through its maze of narrow, colorful alleyways that have preserved their character for centuries.
Visit the historic Jamia Mosque, admire the distinctive architecture of traditional Harari houses with their raised seating platforms and beautifully decorated porcelain niches, and continue to the Arthur Rimbaud House and Museum, where the famous French poet once lived and worked. As evening falls, experience Harar’s most celebrated cultural tradition—the famous Hyena Feeding Ceremony. Outside the city walls, local hyena handlers continue the centuries-old practice of calling and feeding wild hyenas, creating one of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary cultural experiences. Return to your hotel after the ceremony.
Overnight: Harar
Day 4: Discover Harar’s Vibrant Markets and Return to Addis Ababa
After breakfast, spend the morning exploring the lively markets that have made Harar one of East Africa’s historic trading centers for centuries. Walk through the fragrant spice market, browse the colorful textile sections, and immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant commercial atmosphere. Along the way, observe the remarkable craftsmanship of local silversmiths as they create intricate jewelry and decorative items using traditional techniques passed down through generations. You will also meet skilled basket weavers producing the beautifully patterned baskets that have become one of the defining symbols of Harari culture. Following your market visit, depart Harar and drive back to Dire Dawa Airport for your late afternoon domestic flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, your memorable journey through Ethiopia’s chronicles of faith, Islamic heritage, and living traditions comes to an end.
