Day Trip to Mt. Zuqualla

This day Early in the morning we drive south from Addis Ababa to Debre Zeit and then to the feet of the extinct volcano Mount Zuqualla. To visit the Zuqualla Monastery, founded in the 4th century and situated on the top of the mountain, we have to hike for about 4 hours and gain a height difference of about 900 m. We advise being in good physical condition to do this hike.

Situated at the top of the mountain at almost 3,000m sea level, there is also a lake surrounded by a beautiful forest which is considered to be holy. Here we can enjoy the wildlife, such as the Columbus monkeys and the endemic Menelik’s bush buck, as well as birds, including the endemic Ethiopian oriole and Abyssinian woodpecker.

Later after we seen the mountain and surrounding we will be back to our car to drive back to Addis Ababa.

🕕 6:30 AM – Departure from Addis Ababa

• Pickup Location: Hotel/residence in Addis

• Transport: Private 4WD or van (roads can be rough in areas)

🕗 8:30 AM – Arrive at Mt. Zuqualla Base (near Tulu Gudo or Haroo Kersa)

• Stretch and gear check

🕣 8:45 AM – Begin Hike up Mount Zuqualla

• Route: Moderate incline trail through forest and open areas

• Pass by:

  • Highland vegetation and flowering plants

  • Occasional small wildlife (monkeys, birds)

  • Panoramic views of the Rift Valley

• Duration: ~1.5–2 hours to the summit area

🕙 10:30 AM – Visit Zuqualla Monastery (Debre Tsion Monastery)

• Located near the crater rim

• Historic Orthodox monastery with deep spiritual significance

• Explore church compound (modest attire required, no hats inside)

• Learn about local beliefs around the mountain and the crater lake

🕦 11:30 AM – Explore the Crater Lake (Lake Zuqualla)

• Short walk to lake’s edge (inside crater)

• Enjoy serenity, take photos

• Listen to stories or legends from a guide or local elder if arranged

🕛 12:00 PM – Picnic Lunch by the Lake or in Forest Clearing

• Pre-packed meal (e.g. injera with wot, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, juice)

• Enjoy lunch in the peaceful environment of the crater

🕐 1:00 PM – Leisure Time or Optional Activities

• Optional short hikes around the rim

• Birdwatching or quiet reflection

• Meet local pilgrims or monks if permitted

🕜 2:30 PM – Begin Descent

• Return via the same or alternate path

• Enjoy views on the way down

🕓 4:00 PM – Drive Back to Addis Ababa

🕔 6:00 PM – Arrive in Addis Ababa
