The Bale Mountains offer one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular trekking environments, ranging from the high-altitude Sanetti Plateau and glacial lakes to the lush Harenna Forest. The park is also internationally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, including Ethiopian wolves, Mountain Nyala and Bale monkeys.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Dinsho – Bale Mountains National Park

Depart Addis Ababa in the morning and drive southeast toward the Bale Mountains. Enjoy the changing landscapes of the Ethiopian highlands as you travel toward Dinsho, the headquarters and northern gateway to Bale Mountains National Park. After arrival, complete the necessary park formalities and take a short introductory walk around the surrounding forest and grasslands. This is an excellent opportunity to begin looking for Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck, warthogs and endemic birds.

Overnight: Dinsho.

Day 2: Dinsho – Gaysay Valley – Trekking Preparation

After breakfast, begin your first substantial walking experience in the Gaysay Valley. The open grasslands and surrounding hills provide excellent opportunities for wildlife observation. Look for Mountain Nyala, Bohor reedbuck, warthogs and Ethiopian wolves, depending on conditions. The afternoon is reserved for preparation and briefing for the multi-day trek, including checking camping equipment and meeting the trekking team.

Overnight: Dinsho.

Day 3: Dinsho – Sodota Camp

After breakfast, start the trek toward Sodota. The trail gradually climbs through beautiful highland scenery, with expansive grasslands, rocky ridges and Afro-alpine vegetation. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly open and dramatic. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the trail before continuing to the campsite. The afternoon provides time to relax and explore the surrounding area.

Overnight: Sodota Camp.

Day 4: Sodota – Wasama – Trekking Through the Bale Highlands

Continue your trek toward Wasama, crossing spectacular mountain landscapes and high-altitude valleys. The route offers panoramic views across the Bale massif and opportunities to observe the unique vegetation adapted to the harsh Afro-alpine environment. Keep an eye out for Giant Lobelias, endemic rodents and highland birds. The Bale Mountains contain one of Africa’s largest expanses of Afro-alpine habitat, with much of the plateau above 3,000 metres.

Overnight: Wasama Camp.

Day 5: Wasama – Sanetti Plateau

Today brings one of the highlights of the expedition as you continue toward the spectacular Sanetti Plateau. The landscape changes dramatically into vast Afro-alpine moorland dotted with giant lobelias, wetlands and volcanic formations. Spend the afternoon exploring the plateau and searching for the Ethiopian wolf, one of the world’s rarest canids and one of Bale’s most important conservation species. The Sanetti Plateau is also home to large populations of rodents that form an important part of the wolf’s ecosystem.

Overnight: Sanetti Plateau campsite or designated mountain accommodation.

Day 6: Sanetti Plateau – Tullu Dimtu – Mountain Trek

Start early for a spectacular mountain adventure around the Sanetti Plateau and toward Tullu Dimtu, which rises to approximately 4,377 metres and is the highest peak in the Bale Mountains. Enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanic ridges, valleys and highland landscapes. Depending on weather, fitness and local trekking conditions, the summit section can be adjusted by the guide. Return to camp in the afternoon and enjoy a well-earned rest beneath the Bale mountain skies.

Overnight: Sanetti area.

Day 7: Sanetti Plateau – Harenna Forest

After breakfast, begin your descent from the high plateau toward the spectacular Harenna Forest. This is one of the most dramatic transitions in the Bale Mountains, moving from open Afro-alpine landscapes into dense montane and tropical forest. Explore the forest with your guide and look for Bale monkeys, Guereza colobus monkeys, forest birds and other wildlife. Harenna forms a major part of the park’s exceptional ecosystem diversity and extends down toward approximately 1,500 metres.

Overnight: Harenna Forest area.

Day 8: Harenna Forest – Rira – Goba

Spend the morning exploring the Harenna Forest, including its impressive vegetation, giant trees, bamboo areas and wild coffee habitat. Continue toward Rira and then travel to Goba, enjoying the spectacular scenery as the forest and mountain ecosystems gradually change. After several days of trekking, relax at your hotel and enjoy a comfortable evening.

Overnight: Goba.

Day 9: Goba – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, begin the journey back to Addis Ababa. Enjoy the beautiful scenery of southeastern Ethiopia along the way. Depending on your arrival time, you may have some free time in Addis Ababa for shopping or relaxing before the tour concludes. End of Service
