6-Day Northern Ethiopia Historical Route Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Bahir Dar – Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls

• Morning:

  • Arrive in Bahir Dar (usually via Addis Ababa).

  • Hotel check-in and brief refresh.

• Midday:

  • Take a boat trip on Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia.

  • Visit island monasteries such as Ura Kidane Mehret (known for its colorful frescoes).

• Afternoon:

  • Drive or hike to the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Issat) – one of Ethiopia’s most scenic waterfalls.

• Evening:

  • Return to Bahir Dar, enjoy local cuisine and a relaxing night by the lake.

Day 2: Bahir Dar – Gondar (Drive 3-4 hrs)

• Morning:

  • Scenic drive to Gondar, the “Camelot of Africa.”

• Afternoon:

  • Visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi) – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with castles from the 17th century.

  • See Debre Berhan Selassie Church with its famous ceiling of painted angel faces.

  • Visit Fasilides Bath, especially magical if during Timket (Epiphany).

• Evening:

  • Optional traditional dinner with Ethiopian music and dance.

📍 Overnight in Gondar

Day 3: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park (Drive 2-3 hrs)

• Morning:

  • Drive to Simien Mountains, a UNESCO-listed natural site.

  • Meet local guide and scout; begin trekking or scenic drives in the park.

• Afternoon:

  • Spot gelada baboons, incredible mountain views, possibly Walia ibex or Ethiopian wolf.

  • Visit key viewpoints like Chenek or Simien Lodge area.

• Evening:

  • Return to lodge or camp nearby.

📍 Overnight in Simien Mountains / Debark

Day 4: Simien Mountains – Axum (Drive or Flight)

🛫 Optional: If available, take a flight to Axum for a quicker transition.

🚗 Overland (via Shire) is long (~8-10 hrs), best for extended trips.

• Afternoon:

  • Visit the Stelae Fields – massive obelisks and tombs dating back to Axumite Empire.

  • Visit Queen of Sheba’s Palace, Bath, and Ezana’s Inscriptions.

  • Optional: Visit Church of St. Mary of Zion, believed by some to house the Ark of the Covenant.

📍 Overnight in Axum

Day 5: Axum – Lalibela (Flight Recommended)

🛫 Take a morning flight to Lalibela.

• Afternoon:

  • Visit the first group of Lalibela rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO treasure.

  • Highlights include Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, and Bete Golgotha.

• Evening:

  • Attend a traditional coffee ceremony or cultural show.

📍 Overnight in Lalibela

Day 6: Lalibela – Second Group of Churches – Departure

• Morning:

  • Visit the second group of rock churches including the iconic Bete Giyorgis (St. George) carved in the shape of a cross.

  • Optional hike to Asheten Maryam Monastery for panoramic views.

• Midday:

  • Leisure lunch in town.

• Afternoon:

  • Transfer to airport for flight to Addis Ababa or your next destination.
