Experience two of Ethiopia’s most fascinating cultural regions on this 5-day Omo Valley & Harar Cultural Tour. Discover the diverse traditions of the Mursi, Hamer, Karo and Dassanech communities in southern Ethiopia, then explore the ancient walled city of Harar, famous for its colorful markets, traditional houses and unique cultural heritage.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Jinka – Mursi Village – Jinka

Take an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Jinka, the gateway to the Lower Omo Valley. Meet your local guide and drive toward Mago National Park to visit a traditional Mursi village. Experience the community’s distinctive cultural traditions, cattle-based lifestyle, traditional clothing and body adornment. Spend time learning about everyday Mursi life and the relationship between the community and its surrounding environment. Photography should always be done respectfully and with permission. Return to Jinka in the late afternoon.

Overnight: Jinka.

Day 2: Jinka – Key Afer Market – Turmi – Hamer Village

After breakfast, drive toward Turmi, stopping at Key Afer Market when the visit coincides with the local market day.The market provides an excellent opportunity to observe people from surrounding communities gathering to trade livestock, agricultural products, traditional jewelry, clothing and handicrafts. Continue to Turmi and visit a traditional Hamer village. Learn about Hamer traditions, hairstyles, jewelry, livestock keeping and family life. If a traditional bull-jumping ceremony or Evangadi dance takes place during your visit, your guide will help arrange the experience. Ceremonies depend on local community schedules and cannot be guaranteed.

Overnight: Turmi.

Day 3: Turmi – Karo Village – Omorate – Dassanech – Turmi

Start early and travel toward the Omo River to visit the Karo people, famous for their distinctive body painting and cultural traditions. Continue south to Omorate, close to the Kenyan border. Cross the Omo River by local boat and visit a traditional Dassanech village. Discover their traditional homes, clothing, jewelry, livestock-based lifestyle and close relationship with the Omo River. After the visit, return across the river and drive back to Turmi.

Overnight: Turmi.

Day 4: Turmi – Addis Ababa – Harar

After breakfast, begin your journey back toward Addis Ababa. Depending on the available domestic flight schedule, connect onward to Dire Dawa and continue by road to Harar. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and begin exploring the atmospheric old city. Walk through the narrow streets inside the historic walls and discover traditional Harari houses, colorful markets and historic mosques. In the evening, experience one of Harar’s most famous traditions: the Hyena Feeding Ceremony, where local hyena men feed wild hyenas near the city.

Overnight: Harar.

Day 5: Harar – Cultural Heritage – Dire Dawa – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, continue exploring the fascinating city of Harar. Visit Harar Jugol, the historic walled city, and explore its narrow alleyways, traditional Harari homes and colorful markets. Visit the Harari Cultural Museum and important historic sites such as Rimbaud House and the city’s ancient mosques. Spend time learning about Harari traditions, coffee culture, handicrafts and the city’s long history as an important center of trade. In the afternoon, drive to Dire Dawa and transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. End of Service
