3 Days Tour to Lalibela (The 8th Wonder of the World)

Category:

It’s no wonder that the remarkable Lalibela churches have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their unique architectural features, rich history, and profound spiritual significance make them a truly exceptional landmark. Wonderfully preserved within their natural setting, the churches have long been regarded as an outstanding substitute for the holy sites of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. With their fascinating history, intricate design, and breathtaking mountain views, Lalibela is often referred to as the “eighth wonder of the world.” To truly appreciate this, join a tour to Discover Lalibela.

Day 01: Fly to Lalibela and Visit the Rock-Hewn Churches
After breakfast, you will be taken to the airport for your flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. After lunch, begin your exploration of Lalibela’s famous rock-hewn churches. Visit Bete Golgotha-Mika’el, a twin-church complex marking one of the holiest areas, featuring the Selassie Chapel within Bete Golgotha, believed to house the tomb of King Lalibela and adorned with striking carved reliefs of saints inside Bete Mika’el. Continue to Bete Maryam, possibly the oldest church in the complex, with an intricately painted ceiling depicting biblical scenes and symbolic windows representing the Trinity and crucifixion. Explore Bete Meskel, a small chapel known as the “House of the Cross,” and Bete Denagel (House of the Virgins), an intimate grotto-like chapel commemorating fifty Christian nuns martyred in antiquity. Proceed to Bete Medhane Alem, the largest free standing monolithic church in the world, shaped like a Greek temple, with its vast interior supported by dozens of columns. Within, three symbolic empty graves represent Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Later in the afternoon, visit Bete Giyorgis (Church of Saint George), the most iconic of all, carved in the shape of a perfect cross and set in a sunken courtyard reached through tunnels and trenches.
Overnight in Hotel (Bed and Breakfast). After this day of wonder, you will be eager to Discover Lalibela more.

Day 02: Drive to Asheton Maryam and Na’akuto La’ab Monasteries
After breakfast, drive to visit Na’akuto La’ab Monastery, founded by Na’akuto La’ab, the successor of King Lalibela. Inside, you’ll find sacred artifacts believed to have belonged to the king himself crowns, gold-painted drums, ornate crosses, and an illuminated Bible of exceptional beauty. Of special interest are the ancient stone basins that collect holy water dripping from the cave’s roof. Continue to Asheton Maryam Church, a historic sanctuary rich with spiritual treasures. The resident priest will display ancient crosses and a beautifully illustrated Bible featuring centuries-old artwork that reflects Ethiopia’s deep religious tradition.
Overnight in Hotel (Bed and Breakfast). This journey will surely inspire you to Discover Lalibela further.

Day 03: Fly Back to Addis Ababa and Departure
After breakfast, spend the morning exploring the remaining rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. Visit Bete Gabriel-Rufael (House of Archangels Gabriel and Raphael), Bete Marqorios (St. Mercurius/Mark the Evangelist), Bete Emmanuel (House of Emmanuel), and Bete Abba Libanos (House of Abbot Libanos). These southeastern cluster churches, carved from volcanic rock, showcase distinctive Aksumite architectural influences and elaborate decorative motifs unique to Lalibela. After completing your visits, you will be transferred to Lalibela Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of your unforgettable journey.
