Program in Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa – Discover the Islamic Heritage of the Capital

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Your journey begins with an exploration of Addis Ababa’s rich Islamic heritage at the Bilalul Habeshi Museum. This remarkable cultural institution offers an exceptional introduction to Ethiopia’s Islamic history through four carefully curated galleries displaying over 400-year-old handwritten Qur’ans, historic royal artifacts, and an impressive collection of architectural photography that illustrates the country’s enduring Islamic legacy.

You will then visit the Grand Anwar Mosque, the largest and oldest mosque in Addis Ababa. Located in the heart of the vibrant Mercato district, the mosque serves as the city’s principal center of Islamic worship. Its distinctive green-and-white architecture and peaceful atmosphere provide a fascinating insight into Ethiopian Islamic culture while standing only a short distance from Africa’s largest open-air market.

The day’s sightseeing concludes at the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the most significant museums in Sub-Saharan Africa. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of archaeological and historical treasures, including the world-famous fossil remains of Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis) and Selam, the remarkably complete 3.3-million-year-old child hominid fossil. These discoveries offer an unforgettable glimpse into the origins of humanity.

After the tour, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 2: Fly to Dire Dawa and Explore the Historic Walled City of Harar

Following breakfast, transfer to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your morning flight to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic drive of approximately one and a half hours through the surrounding mountains before reaching the ancient fortified city of Harar, one of the most important centers of Islamic culture in Africa. After checking into your hotel, begin exploring Harar Jugol, the centuries-old walled city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you wander through its maze of colorful, narrow alleyways, you will discover the unique character that has made Harar famous for centuries.

Visit the historic Jamia Mosque, one of the city’s most important religious landmarks, before exploring the beautifully preserved traditional Harari houses. These distinctive homes are renowned for their unique architectural style, featuring raised seating platforms and decorative niches designed to display fine porcelain and family heirlooms. Continue to the Arthur Rimbaud House and Museum, where you will learn about the celebrated French poet who once lived and worked in Harar.

As dusk approaches, experience one of Harar’s most iconic traditions the famous Hyena Feeding Ceremony. Outside the ancient city walls, local hyena handlers continue a remarkable custom that has been passed down through generations, calling and feeding wild hyenas in a unique cultural interaction found nowhere else in the world. After this unforgettable experience, return to your hotel.

Overnight: Harar

Day 3: Discover the Vibrant Markets of Harar and Return to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, spend the morning exploring Harar’s lively markets, which have served as important trading centers for centuries. The city’s colorful spice market fills the air with the aromas of locally traded herbs and seasonings, while the textile sections showcase beautifully woven fabrics and traditional Harari garments.

As you continue through the markets, observe the remarkable craftsmanship of local silversmiths creating intricate jewelry and decorative pieces using techniques passed down through generations. You will also encounter skilled basket weavers producing the distinctive geometric-patterned baskets that have become one of the defining symbols of Harari culture.

Following your market visit, depart Harar and drive back to Dire Dawa Airport for your afternoon domestic flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival in the capital, you will be transferred for your onward international departure, bringing your memorable journey through Ethiopia’s living history and Islamic heritage to a close.
