The route also includes the Bale Mountains, Awash National Park, and the historic walled city of Harar.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa & City Tour

Meet and welcome at Bole International Airport and begin your Ethiopian adventure with a tour of Addis Ababa. Visit Entoto Maryam Church and enjoy panoramic views over the capital from Entoto Hills. Continue to the Ethnological Museum and National Museum, home to important archaeological discoveries including the famous fossil remains of Lucy. In the afternoon, explore Merkato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets.

Day 2: Fly to Semera – Danakil Depression – Ahmed Ela

Take a morning flight to Semera, the gateway to the Afar region. From Semera, travel by 4WD through the spectacular Afar landscape toward Lake Afdera. Visit the salt-producing area and continue to Ahmed Ela, a remote settlement on the edge of the Danakil Depression. Enjoy the dramatic desert scenery and sunset around Lake Asale.

Day 3: Dallol, Salt Caravans & Erta Ale Volcano

Start early for an unforgettable exploration of Dallol, famous for its colorful hydrothermal formations, sulfur springs and extraordinary volcanic landscape. See traditional salt-mining activities and camel caravans transporting salt across the desert. Later, drive toward Erta Ale Volcano and begin the evening trek to the volcano’s summit, where conditions permit views of its volcanic activity.

Day 4: Danakil Depression – Mekelle – Gheralta

Descend from the Erta Ale area and continue toward Mekelle. Proceed to the spectacular Gheralta Mountains, stopping en route to visit Abreha we Atsbeha, one of Ethiopia’s remarkable ancient rock-hewn churches. Enjoy the dramatic scenery of the Tigrayan highlands.

Day 5: Abuna Yemata Guh – Yeha – Axum

After breakfast, undertake the challenging excursion to Abuna Yemata Guh, one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular cliff-top churches. The experience combines hiking, rock scrambling and breathtaking mountain scenery. Continue toward Axum, stopping at the ancient archaeological site of Yeha, associated with one of Ethiopia’s earliest civilizations.

Day 6: Axum Historical Tour – Fly to Addis Ababa

Explore the ancient city of Axum, visiting St. Mary of Zion Church, the famous Stele Park, ancient royal tombs, archaeological remains and the inscriptions of King Ezana. Discover the city’s connection with Ethiopia’s ancient kingdoms and traditions. Later, fly back to Addis Ababa.

Day 7: Fly to Bahir Dar – Blue Nile Falls & Lake Tana

Fly to Bahir Dar, located on the shores of Lake Tana. Visit the spectacular Blue Nile Falls, then enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Tana to visit historic island monasteries such as Ura Kidane Mehret. The lake is surrounded by beautiful scenery and centuries-old religious traditions.

Day 8: Bahir Dar – Gondar

Drive to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia. Explore the magnificent Royal Enclosure, including its medieval castles and palaces. Continue to Debre Birhan Selassie Church, renowned for its beautifully painted ceiling, and Fasilides Bath.

Overnight: Gondar

Day 9: Simien Mountains National Park

Travel to the spectacular Simien Mountains National Park for a day of nature and hiking. Enjoy panoramic views of deep valleys, dramatic escarpments and highland landscapes. Look for Gelada baboons, endemic birds and other highland wildlife before returning to Gondar.

Day 10: Fly to Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches

Fly to Lalibela, Ethiopia’s famous sacred city. Begin exploring the remarkable rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam and Bete Giyorgis. Admire the extraordinary architecture carved directly into the volcanic rock and learn about Lalibela’s religious history.

Day 11: Na’akuto La’ab & Asheton Maryam

Visit Na’akuto La’ab Monastery, built into the surrounding cliffs and associated with an important religious tradition. Continue to Asheton Maryam, a historic highland church offering impressive views over the surrounding countryside.

Day 12: Lalibela Churches – Fly to Addis Ababa

Complete your exploration of Lalibela’s southeastern church group, including Bete Gabriel-Rufael, Bete Emmanuel and Bete Abba Libanos. After lunch, transfer to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 13: Addis Ababa – Abijatta-Shalla National Park – Shashemene

Begin the journey south through Ethiopia’s Great Rift Valley. Visit Abijatta-Shalla National Park, known for its beautiful alkaline lakes, acacia woodland, birdlife, ostriches and gazelles. Continue to Shashemene for the night.

Day 14: Shashemene – Bale Mountains – Dinsho

Drive toward the magnificent Bale Mountains. Arrive at Dinsho, the headquarters of Bale Mountains National Park, and take a forest walk in search of Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s bushbuck and other highland wildlife.

Overnight: Dinsho

Day 15: Harenna Forest Exploration

Explore the spectacular Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia’s great highland forests. Walk through dense forest and bamboo zones while looking for Bale monkeys, colobus monkeys, forest hogs and endemic birds. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and rich biodiversity of the forest.

Day 16: Sanetti Plateau – Tullu Dimtu – Hawassa

Cross the extraordinary Sanetti Plateau, one of Africa’s most impressive Afro-alpine landscapes. Search for the rare Ethiopian wolf and enjoy views around Tullu Dimtu, one of Ethiopia’s highest peaks. Descend from the Bale Mountains and continue to Hawassa.

Day 17: Hawassa – Dorze Village – Arba Minch

Begin with a visit to Hawassa Fish Market, where local fishermen bring in their daily catch. Continue south to the mountains above Arba Minch and visit a Dorze village. Experience traditional Dorze culture, famous weaving, traditional bamboo houses and the local way of life.

Day 18: Lake Chamo – Konso – Turmi

Take a boat excursion on Lake Chamo to search for giant crocodiles, hippos and waterbirds. Continue to Konso, a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape famous for its terraced agriculture, stone settlements and distinctive traditions. Continue south toward Turmi, gateway to the Hamer region.

Day 19: Nyangatom – Karo – Hamer Cultural Experience

Explore the communities of the Nyangatom, Karo and Hamer peoples. Visit villages and markets, meet local communities and learn about traditional lifestyles, clothing, body decoration and ceremonies. Along the Omo River, experience some of the most culturally distinctive landscapes in southern Ethiopia.

Day 20: Dassanech – Mursi – Jinka

Travel toward the Omo River and visit Dassanech communities around the lower Omo region. Continue toward Jinka, visiting Mursi communities along the way. The Mursi are particularly known for their distinctive cultural traditions and body adornment.

Day 21: Ari Village – Fly to Addis Ababa

Visit an Ari village near Jinka to experience local agricultural traditions, crafts and community life. Later, transfer to Jinka Airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 22: Addis Ababa – Awash National Park

Drive east toward Awash National Park, one of Ethiopia’s important wildlife areas. Explore the park’s acacia-covered plains and visit Awash Falls. Depending on conditions, look for oryx, gazelles, baboons, crocodiles and a variety of bird species. Continue to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 23: Awash – Harar – Hyena Feeding

Continue east to the historic city of Harar, one of Ethiopia’s most fascinating cultural destinations. In the evening, experience the famous Harar hyena feeding, a unique local tradition in which wild hyenas are fed close to the city.

Day 24: Harar City Tour – Dire Dawa – Addis Ababa

Explore the ancient walled city of Harar Jugol, wandering through its narrow colorful streets and visiting historic mosques, shrines, traditional houses and the Rimbaud House. After the city tour, drive to Dire Dawa Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. End of tour
