Day 01: Arrival and Addis Ababa City Tour

Upon arrival, meet our staff and start your sightseeing tour of Addis Ababa. Begin at Entoto Maryam Church, built in 1877 by Emperor Menelik II on the Entoto Hills, featuring royal artifacts including the emperor’s crown, bed, and gifts from Queen Victoria. Continue to Entoto Park for a panoramic city view at 2,900 MASL. Visit the Ethnological Museum within Addis Ababa University, formerly Emperor Haile Selassie’s palace, housing anthropological and cultural artifacts. Proceed to the National Museum to view Ethiopia’s most famous fossil, “Lucy,” along with Selam, dating back 3.3 million years. Conclude the day at Merkato, Africa’s largest open-air market, bustling with thousands of traders and artisans. Overnight in Addis Ababa.

Day 02: Fly Addis Ababa to Semera and Drive to Ahmed Ella

After breakfast, fly to Semera and continue by road to Afdera, a major salt extraction site named after Lake Afdera. Observe traditional salt evaporation methods before driving through dramatic desert landscapes and small Afar villages en route to Ahmed Ella. Visit the local Afar community to experience their daily lifestyle, then proceed to Lake Asale, a vast salt plain, for a relaxing swim and a stunning sunset reflection. Overnight camping at Ahmed Ella.

Day 03: Visit Dallol and Drive to Erta Ale

Drive to Ragad (Asebo), where Afar workers mine and cut salt blocks for camel caravans. Continue to Dallol, located 125 meters below sea level—one of the hottest and most colorful places on Earth—featuring surreal salt formations, sulfur pools, and volcanic craters. After lunch in Ahmed Ella, drive to Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s active shield volcano. At night, witness the mesmerizing sight of the world’s longest-existing lava lake glowing under the desert sky. Overnight camping at Erta Ale.

Day 04: Drive Erta Ale to Hawzen via Mekelle

After breakfast, drive to Hawzen via Mekelle. En route, visit the rock-hewn Church of Abreha wa Atsbeha, carved from a single rock between 335–340 AD by twin kings Ezana and Sayzana. The church, once a monastery, still preserves ancient murals and relics blackened by Queen Gudit’s fire nine centuries ago. Overnight in Hawzen Lodge.

Day 05: Climb Abuna Yemata Guh Church and Drive to Axum

After breakfast, hike to the extraordinary rock church of Abuna Yemata Guh, perched 2,580 meters above ground. This 6th-century church features breathtaking views and well-preserved religious paintings. Continue driving to Axum, visiting the ancient Yeha Temple en route. Built around 700 BCE, Yeha is Ethiopia’s oldest archaeological site, showcasing remarkable dry-stone masonry linked to the Sabean civilization.

Day 06: Explore Axum and Fly to Addis Ababa

Discover Axum, a 2,500-year-old city once at the heart of a mighty civilization. Visit St. Mary of Zion Church, believed to house the Ark of the Covenant, and explore the coronation yard, Stele Park, the tombs of King Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, Ezana’s inscriptions, Queen of Sheba’s Palace ruins, and the Axum Museum. Later, transfer to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa.

Day 07: Fly to Lalibela

After breakfast, fly to Lalibela, renowned for its 12th-century rock-hewn churches. Explore Bete Golgotha–Mika’el, said to house King Lalibela’s tomb; Bete Maryam, adorned with intricate biblical paintings; Bete Meskel and Bete Denagel, small yet spiritually significant chapels; and Bete Medhane Alem, the world’s largest monolithic church. In the afternoon, visit the iconic Bete Giyorgis (St. George Church), carved in the shape of a cross and considered Lalibela’s masterpiece.

Day 08: Visit Asheton Maryam and Na’akuto La’ab Monasteries

After breakfast, visit Na’akuto La’ab Monastery, founded by King Lalibela’s successor. Discover sacred relics, ornate crosses, and ancient manuscripts, as well as holy water collected in stone basins. Continue to Asheton Maryam Church, a hilltop sanctuary housing centuries-old religious artifacts and illuminated manuscripts.

Day 09: Fly Lalibela – Addis Ababa – Dire Dawa – Harar

After breakfast, fly to Dire Dawa via Addis Ababa and continue to Harar. In the evening, witness the fascinating tradition of the “Hyena Man,” who feeds wild hyenas by hand—a practice dating back centuries and unique to Harar.

Day 10: Visit Harar and Fly to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, explore Harar, the fourth holiest city in Islam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the historic Jegol Wall built in the 1560s, the old city’s colorful alleys, mosques, and shrines. Learn about the life of French poet Rimbaud, who once lived here. Later, drive to Dire Dawa for your flight to Addis Ababa.

Day 11: Drive to Arba Minch

After breakfast, drive to Arba Minch through scenic southern landscapes. En route, visit Gurage villages to learn about Kocho preparation from the false banana plant. Continue through Wolayita farmlands and enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Abaya, known for its pinkish volcanic hue and surrounding highlands.

Day 12: Explore Arba Minch and Surroundings

After breakfast, visit the Dorze people, famed weavers who build towering bamboo huts shaped like elephant heads and prepare Enset-based dishes. Later, enjoy a boat trip on Lake Chamo to spot hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife.

Day 13: Drive Arba Minch – Konso – Turmi

After breakfast, drive to Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its ancient terraced farming and intricate stone-walled villages. Learn about the Konso’s social organization, generation poles, and craftsmanship before continuing to Turmi.

Day 14: Visit Nyangatom and Karo Tribes, and Explore Hamer Village

Drive through the savannah to Kangaten, home to the Nyangatom tribe, known for their elaborate beadwork, goat-skin skirts, and symbolic scarification. Continue to Kolcho, home to the Karo people, famous for intricate body paintings and artistic hairstyles. Return to Turmi to meet the Hamer people, recognized for their ochre-colored hair, ornate jewelry, and the traditional bull-jumping ceremony marking a boy’s passage into manhood.

Day 15: Visit Dassanech and Mursi Tribes, Drive to Jinka

After breakfast, cross the Omo River to meet the Dassanech tribe, known for their distinctive crocodile-scar patterns symbolizing bravery. Continue to Key Afer and visit the Mursi tribe, whose women wear lip plates and scarifications denoting social status and beauty. Their traditional adornments and body art reflect one of Africa’s most ancient living cultures. Proceed to Jinka.

Day 16: Visit Ari Village and Fly to Addis Ababa
