6 Days Choke Mountain & Blue Nile Highlands Adventure

$1,350.00

This six-day journey to Choke Mountain offers an authentic experience in one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful and less explored highland landscapes. Located in the Amhara region near the source area of the Blue Nile Basin, Choke Mountain rises above 4,000 meters and is known for its dramatic scenery, Afro-alpine ecosystems, rare wildlife and rich local culture. The area is often called the “Water Tower of the Blue Nile” because many rivers that feed the Blue Nile originate from these mountains. This tour combines trekking, cultural encounters, and breathtaking natural scenery while visiting traditional Amhara villages, monasteries, forests and highland plateaus. Travelers will experience Ethiopia’s rural life, enjoy panoramic mountain views and explore a pristine environment filled with endemic plants and birds. The tour is perfect for nature lovers, photographers, hikers and travelers looking for authentic community-based tourism experiences away from the typical tourist routes.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Debre Markos – Choke Mountain Area

The journey begins with an early morning drive from Addis Ababa heading northwest toward the Amhara region. The scenic drive passes through the fertile highlands of Ethiopia with beautiful views of farmland, valleys, and rural villages. Along the way there are opportunities to stop for photographs and to observe daily life in the countryside. After reaching Debre Markos, the gateway town to Choke Mountain, lunch will be served before continuing toward the Choke Mountain community tourism area. Upon arrival you will settle into a local eco-lodge or community guesthouse surrounded by spectacular mountain landscapes. In the afternoon you can enjoy a short walk around the village to experience the peaceful environment and interact with local residents. Overnight in the Choke Mountain area.

Day 2: Trekking on the Choke Mountain Plateau

After breakfast the day is dedicated to exploring the beautiful Choke Mountain plateau. A guided trek will take you across rolling alpine grasslands, highland wetlands, and dramatic escarpments with stunning views over the Blue Nile Basin. The plateau is rich in biodiversity and home to unique Afro-alpine vegetation, endemic bird species, and small mammals. During the hike you may encounter shepherds grazing their livestock and farmers working on traditional fields. The trekking route also offers panoramic viewpoints overlooking deep valleys and rivers that eventually flow into the Blue Nile. Picnic lunch will be enjoyed in the mountains before returning to the lodge in the late afternoon. Overnight in the Choke Mountain area.

Day 3: Explore Waterfalls, Rivers and Local Villages

Today focuses on discovering the natural and cultural attractions around the mountain. After breakfast you will hike to scenic waterfalls formed by streams flowing from the Choke highlands. The area is known as the source of several important tributaries of the Blue Nile. The hike also passes through traditional Amhara villages where visitors can learn about local farming practices, traditional houses, and community life. Guests may have the opportunity to taste local food, traditional coffee, and observe cultural activities. The day provides a deeper understanding of how local communities live in harmony with the mountain environment. Overnight in the Choke Mountain area.

Day 4: Summit Area Exploration and Highland Views

This day offers an excursion toward the higher elevations of Choke Mountain, reaching areas close to the summit plateau which rises above 4,000 meters. The landscape becomes more dramatic with vast open highlands, giant lobelia plants, and spectacular viewpoints. From the highest ridges visitors can enjoy sweeping views across the Ethiopian highlands and the distant valleys of the Blue Nile basin. The trek allows time for photography, wildlife observation, and quiet appreciation of this unique ecosystem. After spending time on the summit area, return to the lodge for relaxation and dinner. Overnight in the Choke Mountain area.

Day 5: Cultural Experience and Community Activities

After breakfast the day is dedicated to cultural interaction with the local communities living around Choke Mountain. Visitors can take part in traditional activities such as baking injera, preparing Ethiopian coffee, learning about weaving and handicrafts, or visiting a local market if available. There may also be a visit to a nearby church or monastery that reflects the deep religious traditions of the Amhara people. This day allows travelers to experience authentic Ethiopian hospitality and understand the lifestyle of the mountain communities. In the evening enjoy a traditional dinner with local music or storytelling. Overnight in the Choke Mountain area.

Day 6: Choke Mountain – Debre Markos – Addis Ababa

After breakfast the journey returns to Addis Ababa via Debre Markos. The drive again offers beautiful scenery of the Ethiopian highlands with opportunities for short stops along the way.
