6-Days Northern Ethiopia Tour

Discover the highlights of Northern Ethiopia on this six-day journey through ancient kingdoms, imperial cities, spectacular landscapes and extraordinary religious heritage. The tour combines Lake Tana, Blue Nile Falls, Gondar’s royal castles, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela’s legendary rock-hewn churches.

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar – Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, the beautiful city situated on the shores of Lake Tana. After arrival, begin with a boat excursion on Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest lake. Visit some of the historic monasteries located on the lake’s islands and peninsulas, where you can admire traditional religious paintings, manuscripts and ancient church architecture. After lunch, drive to the spectacular Blue Nile Falls. Walk through the surrounding countryside and enjoy the impressive scenery before returning to Bahir Dar. In the evening, take a relaxing walk along the lakefront and enjoy the sunset.

Day 2: Bahir Dar – Gondar – Royal Heritage

After breakfast, drive from Bahir Dar to Gondar, the former capital of the Ethiopian Empire. Upon arrival, begin your exploration of the city’s historic treasures. Visit Fasil Ghebbi, the impressive royal enclosure containing castles and palaces built during the Gondarine period. Continue to Fasilides’ Bath and the magnificent Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its beautifully painted ceiling decorated with angel faces. In the evening, enjoy traditional Ethiopian cuisine and, if available, a cultural music and dance performance.

Day 3: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park – Sankaber

After breakfast, drive toward the spectacular Simien Mountains National Park. Enter the park and continue to Sankaber, one of the principal gateways to the Simien trekking area. Enjoy your first panoramic views of the dramatic escarpments, deep valleys and rugged mountain peaks. Take a short nature walk and look for Gelada monkeys, birds of prey and other highland wildlife. The Simien Mountains are renowned for their exceptional scenery and endemic wildlife.

Day 4: Simien Mountains – Scenic Trek – Gondar

Begin the morning with a scenic trek through the Simien Mountains. Walk along the escarpment and enjoy spectacular views over the deep valleys and surrounding peaks. Depending on weather, fitness and trail conditions, the walk can include viewpoints around Sankaber, Jinbar or nearby trekking areas. Keep an eye out for large troops of Gelada monkeys, one of the most distinctive animals of the Ethiopian highlands. After lunch, drive back to Gondar. Spend the evening relaxing or exploring the city’s local markets and traditional neighborhoods.

Day 5: Gondar – Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches

Take a morning flight from Gondar to Lalibela. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and begin exploring the extraordinary Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches.Visit the northern group, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Maskal and Bete Denagel. Walk through the ancient passages and tunnels connecting the churches while learning about their history and religious significance. In the afternoon, continue to Bete Giyorgis (St. George), the iconic cross-shaped church carved deep into the rock. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner and, depending on the local religious calendar, experience an Ethiopian Orthodox ceremony.

Day 6: Lalibela – Final Cultural Experience – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, continue your exploration of Lalibela with the remaining churches, including Bete Amanuel, Bete Gabriel-Rufael and Bete Mercoreus, depending on your previous day’s visits. Take some time to explore the local community, browse traditional handicrafts and enjoy a final Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy some free time in Addis Ababa for shopping or a farewell dinner before the tour concludes.
