Program in Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa – Discover the Islamic Heritage of the Capital

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel for check in. Your cultural journey begins with a visit to the Bilalul Habeshi Museum, a remarkable institution dedicated to Ethiopia’s Islamic heritage. This exclusive museum features four carefully curated galleries displaying over 400-year-old handwritten Qur’ans, historic royal artifacts and an impressive collection of architectural photography that highlights the country’s rich Islamic legacy. Continue to the Grand Anwar Mosque, the largest and oldest mosque in Addis Ababa. Situated in the heart of the bustling Mercato district, the mosque is recognized for its distinctive green-and-white architecture and serves as the city’s principal center of Islamic worship. Its location beside Africa’s largest open air market provides visitors with a unique cultural experience. The final visit of the day is the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s most important museums. The museum houses Ethiopia’s extraordinary archaeological treasures, including the world-famous fossil remains of Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis) and Selam, the remarkably preserved 3.3-million-year-old child hominid.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Bale Mountains National Park

After an early breakfast, depart Addis Ababa in a comfortable 4WD vehicle and journey south through the spectacular Great Rift Valley. Along the way, enjoy scenic views of Ethiopia’s beautiful lakes before climbing into the lush highlands of the Arsi-Bale Mountains. Pause in a major highland town such as Asella or Dinsho for Dhuhr Prayer at a local mosque. Upon arrival at Bale Mountains National Park Headquarters in Dinsho, enjoy a leisurely nature walk through the juniper woodlands, where you may encounter endemic wildlife including the graceful Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck.

Overnight: Bale Mountains

Day 3: Sanetti Plateau & Harenna Cloud Forest

Following breakfast, travel to the magnificent Sanetti Plateau, an Afro-alpine ecosystem rising above 4,000 meters. This remarkable landscape offers excellent opportunities to observe the endangered Ethiopian Wolf as it hunts giant mole-rats among the giant lobelia plants. Cross the mountain pass before descending into the magical Harenna Cloud Forest, one of Africa’s largest remaining tropical cloud forests. Discover wild coffee trees, dense moss-covered vegetation, towering bamboo forests, and remarkable biodiversity. Stop for Dhuhr and Asr Prayers in a peaceful natural setting on the plateau or at a local mosque in the forest-edge village of Rira, followed by a picnic lunch. Later, enjoy a short guided hike through the forest to a secluded waterfall before returning across the plateau while taking in spectacular afternoon mountain scenery.

Overnight: Bale Mountains

Day 4: Pilgrimage to the Sacred Dire Sheikh Hussein Shrine

Today, drive northeast toward the Bale lowlands to visit Dire Sheikh Hussein, one of East Africa’s most significant Islamic pilgrimage destinations. Explore the iconic white-walled religious complex dating back to the 10th century. Wander through its beautifully preserved mosques, shrines, and underground catacombs dedicated to the revered Sheikh Hussein, who played a vital role in spreading Islam throughout the region. Join local worshippers for Dhuhr Prayer within the historic courtyard before spending time in peaceful reflection and observing local spiritual traditions. Continue exploring the sacred caves and the historic holy water ponds known locally as leeqo before beginning the return journey toward the Bale highlands.

Overnight: Bale Mountains

Day 5: Return to Addis Ababa

After breakfast, depart the Bale region and begin your scenic drive back to Addis Ababa. Travel through changing landscapes as you descend from the cool mountain highlands into the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy a relaxing lunch break at a certified Halal restaurant near Lake Ziway or Bishoftu, allowing time for Dhuhr Prayer. Arrive in Addis Ababa in the afternoon and check in to your hotel. Spend the evening relaxing in preparation for your northern journey the following day.

Overnight: Addis Ababa

Day 6: Flight to Mekelle – The Land of the First Hijra (Al Nejashi)

Take an early morning domestic flight to Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray Region. Drive north to the historic village of Negash, home to the revered Al Nejashi Mosque, one of Africa’s oldest Islamic sites. This sacred location is believed to be the resting place of several companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who sought refuge in Ethiopia during the First Hijra after fleeing persecution in Mecca. They were welcomed by the righteous Christian King Armah (Al Najashi), making this site a lasting symbol of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence. Explore the beautifully restored mosque complex and visit the ancient tombs of the early Muslim refugees before returning to Mekelle.

Overnight: Mekelle

Day 7: Mekelle – Addis Ababa – Departure

Enjoy breakfast before spending a relaxed morning exploring Mekelle or shopping for locally produced highland honey and traditional handicrafts. Offer Dhuhr Prayer at one of Mekelle’s central mosques before transferring to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, enjoy some final shopping for Ethiopia’s world-renowned coffee, traditional textiles, or handmade souvenirs before your transfer to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your international departure.
