Experience the extraordinary diversity of Ethiopia on this 14-day journey from the historic north to the culturally rich south. Explore ancient monasteries, imperial castles, dramatic mountain landscapes and Lalibela’s legendary rock-hewn churches before traveling south to discover the traditions of the Dorze, Konso, Mursi, Hamer, Karo and Dassanech communities.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa – City & Cultural Discovery

Arrive in Addis Ababa, where you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, begin your Ethiopian experience with a visit to the National Museum, home to the famous fossil remains of Lucy. Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral and Mount Entoto, where you can enjoy panoramic views across the capital. In the evening, experience a traditional Ethiopian dinner accompanied by cultural music and dancing.

Overnight: Addis Ababa.

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar – Lake Tana

Take a morning flight to Bahir Dar, located on the shores of beautiful Lake Tana. After check-in and lunch, enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Tana. Visit historic island and lakeside monasteries decorated with traditional religious paintings and learn about Ethiopia’s ancient Christian heritage. Return to Bahir Dar in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxing walk along the lakefront.

Overnight: Bahir Dar.

Day 3: Bahir Dar – Blue Nile Falls – Gondar

After breakfast, drive to the spectacular Blue Nile Falls. Walk through the surrounding countryside and enjoy views of the waterfall and lush highland landscape. Continue by road to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening.

Day 4: Gondar – Royal Heritage & Historic Churches

Spend the day exploring the historical treasures of Gondar. Visit Fasil Ghebbi, the impressive royal enclosure containing castles and palaces from the Gondarine period. Continue to Fasilides’ Bath and the magnificent Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its beautifully painted ceiling. In the afternoon, explore the city’s traditional neighborhoods and local markets. In the evening, enjoy Ethiopian cuisine and traditional music if available.

Day 5: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park

After breakfast, drive to Simien Mountains National Park, one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural destinations. Continue toward Sankaber and enjoy your first views of the dramatic escarpments, deep valleys and rugged mountain peaks. Take a short scenic walk and look for Gelada monkeys, birds of prey and other highland wildlife. Enjoy the peaceful mountain environment before returning to your accommodation.

Overnight: Simien Mountains.

Day 6: Simien Mountains – Scenic Trek – Gondar

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic trek through the Simien Mountains. Walk along the escarpments and viewpoints overlooking dramatic valleys and cliffs. The trek offers excellent opportunities to observe Gelada monkeys and highland birds while enjoying the spectacular scenery. After lunch, drive back to Gondar. Spend the evening relaxing or exploring the city.

Day 7: Gondar – Lalibela – Rock-Hewn Churches

Take a morning flight to Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s most extraordinary historic destinations. After arrival and lunch, begin exploring the famous Lalibela rock-hewn churches. Visit Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam, Bete Maskal and Bete Denagel, discovering the tunnels and passages connecting the churches. Continue to Bete Giyorgis (St. George), the iconic cross-shaped church carved into the ground.

Overnight: Lalibela.

Day 8: Lalibela – Full-Day Heritage & Local Culture – Addis Ababa

After breakfast, complete your exploration of Lalibela’s remarkable churches, including Bete Amanuel, Bete Gabriel-Rufael and Bete Mercoreus. Take time to visit the surrounding countryside and experience an authentic Ethiopian coffee ceremony. You may also have time to browse local handicrafts and souvenirs. Later, transfer to Lalibela Airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, connect with your evening flight to Arba Minch if the flight schedule permits.

Day 9: Arba Minch – Dorze Village – Lake Chamo – Konso

After breakfast, drive into the Gamo Highlands to visit a Dorze village. Meet the local community and discover their distinctive traditional houses, famous weaving traditions, farming practices and local cuisine. Experience the warmth of village life and learn about the role of Enset, often called false banana, in the local food system. Return toward Arba Minch for a Lake Chamo boat excursion, where you may encounter large Nile crocodiles, hippos and numerous waterbirds. Continue to Konso in the afternoon and explore its remarkable cultural landscape, including stone terraces and traditional settlements.

Overnight: Konso.

Day 10: Konso – Jinka – Mursi Village

After breakfast, continue south toward Jinka, the gateway to the Lower Omo Valley. After lunch, drive toward Mago National Park and visit a traditional Mursi village. Learn about Mursi culture, cattle keeping, traditional body adornment, local livelihoods and community life. Return to Jinka in the late afternoon and enjoy a relaxing evening.

Overnight: Jinka.

Day 11: Jinka – Key Afer Market – Turmi – Hamer Culture

After breakfast, travel toward Turmi, stopping at Key Afer Market if the itinerary coincides with the local market day. Experience the colorful market atmosphere and observe people from surrounding communities trading livestock, agricultural products, clothing, jewelry and handmade goods. Continue to Turmi and visit a traditional Hamer village. Discover their distinctive hairstyles, jewelry, livestock-based lifestyle and cultural traditions. If a bull-jumping ceremony or Evangadi dance is taking place during your visit, your guide will help arrange the experience. Ceremonies depend on local community schedules and cannot be guaranteed.

Overnight: Turmi.

Day 12: Turmi – Karo Village – Omo River

Today, travel toward the Omo River to visit the Karo people, renowned for their traditional body painting and distinctive cultural practices. Visit a Karo village and learn about their relationship with the Omo River, agriculture, livestock and surrounding environment. Enjoy spectacular views of the river and surrounding landscape before returning to Turmi.

Overnight: Turmi

Day 13: Turmi – Omorate – Dassanech – Arba Minch

Start early and drive south to Omorate, close to the Kenyan border. Cross the Omo River by local boat and visit a traditional Dassanech village. Experience their distinctive homes, clothing, jewelry, livelihood and relationship with the river. After the visit, return to Omorate and begin the long drive north toward Arba Minch, enjoying the changing landscapes along the way.

Overnight: Arba Minch.

Day 14: Arba Minch – Addis Ababa – Departure

After breakfast, enjoy some free time in Arba Minch before transferring to the airport for your flight to Addis Ababa. Depending on your international departure time, enjoy a final Ethiopian coffee ceremony, souvenir shopping or farewell lunch before transferring to Bole International Airport for your departure.
