Day Trip to Yerer Mountain

Yere Mountain, located east of Addis Ababa, is a majestic peak rising 10 km north of Dukem at 1,950 meters above sea level. This collapsed caldera features a towering rock at its center and is designated as a national forest priority area. The mountain is home to unique attractions, including endemic Juniper trees, various bird species such as the African Kingfisher and lappet-headed vulture, and wildlife like warthogs and baboons. Its stunning views encompass deep canyons, gorges, and the highest peak, offering breathtaking sights of the surrounding areas, including Debrezeit, Bishoftu, Lake Babogaya, and Koka Dam.

🕕 6:30 AM – Departure from Addis Ababa

🕗 8:00 AM – Arrival at Base of Yerer Mountain

• Short briefing by guide (if applicable)

• Light warm-up and prepare hiking gear

🕣 8:30 AM – Begin Hike up Yerer Mountain

• Route: Moderate trail with occasional steep patches

• Sights:

  • Highland forest and open moorlands

  • Wildflowers (seasonal)

  • Bird species like Lammergeier and Augur Buzzard

  • Possible sightings of colobus monkeys or hyenas

• Duration: ~2–2.5 hours ascent

🕚 11:00 AM – Summit Experience

• Reach summit (~3,100m)

• Take photos, relax, enjoy panoramic views over the Rift Valley and Addis Ababa in the distance

• Short meditation or quiet reflection time

🕦 11:30 AM – Begin Descent

• Take an alternate scenic route if available

• Enjoy more wildlife and local flora along the trail

🕛 1:00 PM – Return to Base & Picnic Lunch

• Pre-packed picnic lunch (provided or self-arranged)

  • Suggestions: Injera rolls, tibs, boiled eggs, fruit, juice/water

• Optional rest under the trees or visit nearby farm/village

🕓 4:00 PM – Drive Back to Addis Ababa

• Scenic drive, possibly spotting rural life and animals along the way
